Chapter · 13:37-15:28

Task forces assemble the units required for a particular mission

British tasking-force wording in the 1890s and other claimed antecedents suggest parallel origins, while translation complicates the search for an inventor of task force.

Notes

A task force is the force assigned to accomplish a task. Several navies could have arrived independently at similar language because they needed names for forces assigned to particular operations. The British claim includes tasking-force wording in the 1890s, when a squadron could be assigned as that force. Claimed antecedents also include Italian and American Civil War-era usage, with the French identification remaining tentative. These antecedents did not necessarily use the exact modern phrase, and translating them all as task force makes a single origin harder to establish. In modern usage, a task force commonly groups several battle groups for one operation.
