How Task Force 58 standardized carrier groups

The American order of battle is presented as a standardized carrier-group system with layered escorts and protected command ships.

Notes

Most Task Force 58 groups paired two fleet carriers with two light carriers, backed by heavy or light cruisers and destroyers for air defense and screening; Task Group 58.4 operated one fleet carrier short. USS Canberra, a Baltimore-class heavy cruiser originally named Pittsburgh, carried the Australian cruiser's name in memory of HMAS Canberra. Indianapolis carried Spruance but had explicit orders to keep him away from a surface fight, while Lexington would also withdraw with the carriers. The arrangement treated command preservation, strike coordination, and escort density as parts of one force design.
