With Germany contained behind North Sea and Channel barriers, the Royal Navy would need fewer heavy units in the North Atlantic. Courageous and Glorious might survive the Norwegian campaign and join Illustrious, with Eagle or Hermes also available in the Mediterranean. That could produce a Taranto strike built around several carrier air groups rather than one, multiplying the Swordfish and fighter force. A stronger follow-up option might even allow battleships to close after the air attack. One altered campaign could therefore release carrier strength for a distant theatre.

What extra carriers could have changed at Taranto
If Norway held and British carriers survived, the Royal Navy might have mounted a much larger strike on the Italian fleet.
