A three-carrier Taranto raid could cripple the Italian fleet

Three proposed waves combine forty-eight torpedoes with twenty-four bombers while Fulmars illuminate the targets.

Notes

The proposed raid uses seventy-two Swordfish and twelve Fulmars, with the fighters taking over flare-dropping duties. Its comparison starts from a twenty-four-aircraft allocation of twelve torpedo carriers, eight bombers, and four flare aircraft. Three proposed waves could each carry sixteen torpedoes and eight bomb loads, bringing the total to forty-eight torpedoes and twenty-four bombers. Using roughly five historical torpedo hits as a debated baseline, the calculation treats about twenty hits as conceivable. This is a tentative estimate for the larger attack. The increased bomb load would add further cumulative damage.
