What Japanese investigators learned - and missed

Wooden fins recovered after the raid validated Japanese work on shallow-water torpedoes, but the British tension-wire method went unnoticed.

Notes

Japanese investigators recovered pieces of wood that resembled the stabilizing fins already under development for their torpedoes. The debris confirmed that the British shallow-water method worked in combat. They did not identify the tension wires, which looked like stray cable once separated from the weapons. Taranto therefore influenced Pearl Harbor preparations through partial technical observation rather than a complete transfer of British practice.
