Why did Germany not attempt a Taranto-style torpedo-aircraft raid on Scapa Flow?
Short answerThe range was long, even from Norway, and British radar-directed fighters made the approach much harder.
NotesA German He 111 torpedo strike on Scapa Flow would have faced a long journey even from Norwegian bases. British radar and fighter defences would give warning and contest the approach. The conditions that let slow Swordfish reach Taranto at night did not transfer cleanly to the Royal Navy's northern anchorage. Range and interception risk made the apparent parallel much less promising.
