Heavy material damage with limited loss of life

The raid caused comparatively few deaths aboard the battleships but destroyed fuel the Italian fleet could ill afford to lose.

Notes

The raid killed twenty-three people aboard Littorio, sixteen aboard Conte di Cavour, and one aboard Caio Duilio. Those losses were serious but small beside the material effect of disabling three capital ships. Bombing also destroyed naval fuel that Italy could ill afford to lose. The result imposed a much larger operational and logistical cost than the casualty count alone suggests.
