Taranto's psychological effect

The Taranto raid damaged battleships and placed Italian crews and operations under continuing strain through fear of another night attack.

Notes

A night strike against an anchored fleet also had lasting human consequences. A force that expects attack after dark can lose rest, confidence, and freedom of action even when no new raid arrives. In the confined Mediterranean, the Royal Navy's reputation for operating at night magnified that pressure. Taranto therefore continued as psychological warfare after the immediate damage had been done.
