Why Taranto and Pearl Harbor resist simple comparison

Taranto and Pearl Harbor both demonstrate carrier striking power, but different aircraft numbers, alert states, weapons mixes, and political circumstances make direct comparisons misleading.

Notes

Taranto sent 21 Fleet Air Arm aircraft at night against an enemy already at war, while Japan's much larger Pearl Harbor strike arrived around dawn. Taranto's torpedo-heavy force also differed from Pearl Harbor's broader mix of fighters, dive bombers, and torpedo aircraft. Pearl Harbor combined strategic and tactical surprise, whereas Taranto surprised defenders about the moment and method of an attack they already knew was possible during wartime. The comparison works best when it identifies how surprise, readiness, target density, and weapon effects shaped the outcome instead of treating one raid as a scaled version of the other.
