The two Swordfish following the opening attack also aimed at Conte di Cavour, but both missed. Their torpedoes reportedly exploded in mud near Andrea Doria at the ends of their runs. Running too deep or wide, or receiving too little magnetic signature to operate the duplex mechanism, remain possible explanations. Both crews escaped after tight 180-degree turns inside the harbour and flew back out through the obstacles.
