Five torpedo bombers in the second wave arrived shortly after midnight, about half an hour after the first attack had finished. Fires at fuel tanks and the seaplane base added to the noise and confusion, making approaching engines harder to hear. Repair and assessment work had begun, with lights on and people exposed around the damaged facilities. The attackers still had to avoid balloons, ships and torpedo nets. Their approach met an alerted harbour whose own damage-control activity also complicated its defence.
