An unexploded torpedo leaves the lost Swordfish's attack uncertain

A Swordfish crashed with no survivors, leaving a torpedo found beside a cruiser as uncertain evidence that its crew had released before going down.

Notes

One of the early aircraft in the second wave took a hit, veered across another Swordfish's path, and plunged into the harbour. Neither crewman survived. A torpedo found floating beside a heavy cruiser the following morning was attributed to that aircraft because no other launch appeared to account for it. The suggested explanation is that the weapon struck the cruiser without detonating, possibly after an early release. Both the release and the torpedo's behaviour remain uncertain.
