Why Charles Lamb thought he was the only survivor

Unable to see the other Swordfish through the barrage, Charles Lamb stayed over Taranto to establish what the strike had achieved.

Notes

Charles Lamb lost sight of the other Swordfish and became convinced that his crew alone had survived. He remained above the harbour because he expected senior officers to ask how many torpedoes had hit and whether the operation had succeeded. Dense anti-aircraft fire prevented him from seeing clearly, while his observer struggled to look over the side during evasive manoeuvres. The observer also needed the compass to establish their direction. Lamb stayed longer than planned before following the carrier's beacon home, still believing the rest of the force had been lost.
