The Talos example uses a range of 92 kilometres and a theoretical coverage area of about 26,590 square kilometres. That area is compared with roughly seventeen Greater Londons to show the scale of missile-era area defence. The operational benefit is room for ships to spread out within the defended region. A formation must still leave sufficient reach beyond its own positions for the missile system to engage an approaching threat. Increasing weapon range supports a larger formation footprint as well as a more distant interception.

How Talos range expands the space a task group can use
Talos illustrates how missile reach gives a dispersed task group more room to operate while retaining an outer defensive zone.
