Takatsuki combined steam propulsion with two Mark 42 5-inch guns, ASROC, a Bofors 375 mm ASW rocket launcher, torpedoes, and space for two DASH drones. The ships reached about 4,500 tons fully loaded, with a quoted range of 6,000 nautical miles at 16 knots and a maximum speed of 32 knots. Later upgrades introduced eight Harpoon missiles and Sea Sparrow while removing one gun and the drones. The upgrades differed between ships: Phalanx went only to Kikuzuki. ASROC, the Bofors launcher, and torpedo tubes remained part of the ASW fit. Refitting depended on the ship's intended work and the useful life remaining in its hull.
