Destroying a city can prolong resistance after an invasion

Urban destruction and prepared defenses could turn an intended rapid conquest into prolonged resistance.

Notes

Bombardment can flatten a city while creating human and cultural losses around which resistance grows. Taking key locations quickly and restoring normality is the preferred outcome in this invasion scenario. Cities make that difficult because buildings, bridges, tunnels, railways, and small passages give defenders many positions and routes. Taiwanese defenders have also had decades to prepare for an amphibious attack. Delays ashore give them time to change the political and military conditions of the war.
