Taiwan's inventory combines old GUPPY II conversions from the Tench and Balao classes, Dutch-built submarines acquired in the 1980s, and a newly launched indigenous boat. Its surface ships, fast attack craft, amphibious vessels, mines, aircraft, artillery, and uncrewed systems add different ways to contest the approaches. The relevant measure is whether this mixed arsenal can sink or delay transports and landing ships, even when individual platforms cannot defeat China's best combatants. Striking the lift after the first wave lands could isolate it from the second and third waves. China's large army would matter far less if the ships needed to carry it across the strait were lost or forced back.
