Taiwan's political status does not remove the amphibious problem

Whether a conflict over Taiwan is described as an unresolved civil war or an international war, an attacking force still has to cross water and execute an amphibious operation.

Notes

Taiwan's de facto and de jure status can be disputed through the language of an unresolved Chinese civil war or an international conflict. That political description does not change the military problem imposed by the Taiwan Strait. An attacker still has to move forces over water and conduct an amphibious operation against a defended island. Geography therefore remains an operational constraint whatever legal or political label is applied to the conflict.
