Taiwan's beaches and mountainous interior constrain an invasion

Difficult beach approaches, dense cities and mountain jungle complicate an invasion, with rumours of underground bases adding uncertainty about defensive preparations.

Notes

Taiwan's landing beaches, dense urban areas and mountainous interior create different obstacles for an invading force. Many beach gradients restrict the landing vessels that can reach shore, and even some beaches accessible to landing craft are unattractive landing sites. Mountain and jungle terrain occupies a large part of the island. Reports of Swedish civil engineers helping to build underground bases are presented as rumours, so the extent of those facilities remains uncertain. Taiwan has had more than seventy years to prepare for an invasion.
