The Type 1934 and Type 1936 Zerstörer designs occupied the position of large fleet destroyers in German operations. The T1 torpedo boats therefore fulfilled many of the duties assigned elsewhere to smaller destroyers. Type 1934 engine and power-system problems made independent operations difficult to trust, while the T1 boats gained a reputation for reliability. Their machinery made them dependable operational units, but their torpedo-centered layout still restricted their suitability for other duties.
