How the T-class torpedo-tube layout evolved

Six internal tubes could be reloaded, while four external one-shot tubes gave the early boats a ten-torpedo forward attack before later layouts added stern coverage.

Notes

The early T-class arrangement divided the ten-torpedo attack between six internal reloadable tubes and four external one-shot tubes. Two external weapons sat at the bow and two abreast of the conning tower, concentrating all ten torpedoes into the forward arc. In later designs, the amidships pair faced aft to provide some sternward coverage instead. Tube direction and reloadability shaped the choice between maximum opening weight and the ability to attack a target after it had passed.
