The T-class ten-torpedo salvo is an ambush weapon

The Royal Navy's ten-torpedo forward salvo points to a submarine designed to ambush forces in confined waters, then withdraw toward another prepared position.

Notes

The T-class forward battery could put ten torpedoes into the water at once, an unusually large spread suited to an ambush. Two submarines positioned around straits or island channels in Southeast Asia could attack a task force from different angles with as many as twenty weapons. While the target turns and evades, the boats gain time to leave the firing position instead of remaining in a prolonged pursuit. They then move toward another ambush point with fewer torpedoes, ideally reinforcing a refreshed submarine already waiting there. The battery fits concentrated surprise in confined waters, followed by withdrawal toward another prepared position. It is poorly suited to sustained wolfpack hunting.
