T-class torpedo spreads and prewar ASW planning

The T class was designed to ambush Japanese formations with large torpedo spreads, while ASDIC doctrine and submarine special operations show a wider underwater-war effort.

Notes

The T class carried a large bow salvo for a specific Far Eastern mission: waiting in the South China Sea and firing ten torpedoes at an approaching Japanese task force. Royal Navy calculations accepted a limited hit probability and used salvo size to make one or more damaging hits likely. On the defensive side, the service developed ASDIC and anti-submarine doctrine, though confidence that the detection problem had been solved proved excessive. British submarines also supported intelligence and special-operations work, placing underwater warfare within both fleet defence and covert operations.
