Symbolic force and fear in Tarkin's doctrine

The Star Destroyer and ultimate weapon illustrate a coercive theory in which visible scale becomes a political symbol that deters resistance.

Notes

Tarkin argues that most citizens respond to symbols more readily than to numerical calculations. The immense scale of a Star Destroyer can therefore discourage a potential attacker before any rational comparison of forces occurs. He extends that logic to an apparently invulnerable ultimate weapon that might subjugate worlds without repeated demonstrations of conventional force. Fear then becomes a governing instrument, allowing regional authorities to control territory without constant central intervention. In naval terms, this fictional example separates the psychological effect of conspicuous power from the material combat value of the platform carrying it.
