Near the First Fleet's landing place at The Rocks, a public park preserves land that has remained in public ownership since 1788. The site previously held a hospital, Queen's Wharf, shops, houses, the first Commissariat Store, and the first post office. The commemoration garden opened in 2005. Stone tablets along its paths carry the names of the people who arrived aboard the eleven ships in 1788.
