Sydney left Fremantle on 11 November 1941 escorting the troopship Zealandia toward Sunda Strait. HMS Durban relieved her for Zealandia's final leg to Singapore on 17 November. Sydney then turned back toward Fremantle and was expected there on the afternoon of 20 November. Her failure to arrive is the immediate operational setting for the encounter with Kormoran.
