Swordfish remain useful on the earlier carriers

More carriers do not require an immediate American replacement for the Swordfish, which remains useful early in the war and for night attacks on unprotected surface ships.

Notes

Earlier carrier completion creates demand for aircraft, but the Fairey Swordfish remains suitable in 1939 and 1940. Its prospects become less comfortable in 1941, depending on the mission. A night attack on German surface ships without carrier support remains a useful role. American aircraft could enter the mix as the war continues, without being essential to equip every earlier carrier immediately.
