The Swordfish was designed for torpedo attack, spotting, and reconnaissance, but the airframe could perform other missions. Dive-bombing operations in Greece and North Africa show that flexibility, including attacks in which semi-armour-piercing bombs could affect an armoured column. Its usable mission set provides a better measure of the aircraft than the appearance of a biplane.

Swordfish could also dive-bomb ground targets
The Swordfish's torpedo, spotting, and reconnaissance label did not prevent it from serving as a dive-bomber against land targets.
