Inside the Swiss Haufen pike-square system

The Haufen combined mutually supporting pike squares with halberdiers and ranged troops, balancing protection against cavalry with independent maneuver.

Notes

The mature Haufen system emerged from almost two centuries of tactical development and was in place by the Burgundian Wars of 1474-1477. The tactical description draws explicitly on Albert Winkler's 2022 article in the Swiss American Historical Society Review. Swiss doctrine normally deployed three pike squares close enough to support one another while preserving independent movement. Long pikes protected the formation from cavalry, while halberdiers could pass through the ranks for close combat and archers, crossbowmen, or early firearms supplied ranged power. Spacing within the ranks allowed different weapon types to move through the formation rather than operate as isolated arms. If surrounded, the square could halt and face weapons outward in the hedgehog formation. Winkler's quoted account says no opponent penetrated a formed hedgehog in more than 200 years of combat. The system combined mass with battlefield maneuverability.
