Offensive war concealed Sweden's defensive weakness

Sweden could tie down enemy resources abroad, but long land borders and insufficient manpower made reverses dangerous once internal coordination weakened.

Notes

A territorial empire created borders that Sweden had to defend with a limited population. Offensive operations partly solved the problem by forcing enemies to spend resources in their own territory rather than attacking Sweden's. That method worked only while Swedish forces retained initiative and central coordination. Internal disputes or organizational decline exposed possessions that the available manpower could not hold. The same expansion that had produced security therefore became a source of rapid collapse when the strategic direction reversed.
