Gotland and Sweden's Baltic reconnaissance problem

Gotland's aircraft gave Sweden mobile warning and reconnaissance in a Baltic defense strategy built around buying time.

Notes

Sweden lacked the forces and aviation infrastructure to watch every Baltic approach, so information and warning time became central to national defense. The prospect that Soviet aggression might move from Finland to Sweden made the longstanding eastern threat especially concrete. Gotland combined cruiser armament, minelaying, and Hawker Osprey reconnaissance aircraft in a mobile strategic asset. Swedish modifications to the Osprey reduced dependence on foreign support and made the aircraft easier to sustain in national service. As land-based aircraft gained range, the aviation role became less necessary and the ship's value shifted toward anti-aircraft defense.
