Sweden's HSwMS Artemis and mobile listening

HSwMS Artemis illustrates why smaller navies retain dedicated electronic-intelligence ships that can change their listening position.

Notes

Sweden's current intelligence ship is identified here as HSwMS Artemis. The roughly 2,200-ton vessel has accommodation for about forty people, with the hull built in Poland and the specialist fit completed at Kockums in Sweden. A dedicated ship lets operators move sensors and collection teams to different parts of the coast or open sea. That mobility complicates an opponent's assumptions about where signals are being monitored. Sweden is one of several countries that continues to regard a seagoing electronic-intelligence capability as useful even when ordinary warships also carry listening equipment.
