Sverdlov-class cruisers demanded a heavier counter

A Cold War matchup question argues that contemporary six-inch cruisers were not a safe answer to a Sverdlov-class ship and points instead to retained heavy firepower.

Question

Which Western cruiser could defeat a Sverdlov-class cruiser one-on-one with reasonable certainty?

Short answer

No six-inch cruiser offered a comfortable guarantee; a retained heavy ship such as HMS Vanguard was a more convincing answer.

Notes

Belfast, Cleveland, or another six-inch cruiser would not provide a sure one-on-one answer to a Sverdlov-class cruiser. The Soviet ship's combination of size and gun power makes that matchup too uncertain. Britain retained ships such as HMS Vanguard partly because a capital ship could be reactivated to hunt a threat beyond the comfortable reach of light cruisers. Cold War cruiser anxiety therefore helped preserve some utility for wartime heavy ships.
