Sussex sank a German tanker and escaped U-264

On the way to the Eastern Fleet, Sussex intercepted the German tanker Johann Freiburg and then evaded four torpedoes fired by U-264.

Notes

Sussex left Britain to join the Fourth Cruiser Squadron in the Indian Ocean. En route she intercepted and sank the German tanker Johann Freiburg southwest of Cape Finisterre. U-264 attempted an immediate response by firing four torpedoes at the cruiser. Sussex avoided every weapon and continued toward her new theatre. The short encounter combines cruiser commerce interdiction with the submarine threat surrounding the movement of major surface ships.
