On 5 September 1945 Sussex entered Singapore harbour carrying Rear Admiral Cedric Holland's flag. The Japanese garrison commander signed the formal surrender of his army aboard the cruiser. Operation Tiderace had originally envisaged a major amphibious assault to retake Singapore. Japan's wider surrender transformed that combat plan into an occupation and capitulation mission. Sussex ended the war as both a veteran combatant and a visible instrument of restored Allied authority.
