A surrender message exposes command breakdown

Carlson's attempt to offer surrender collapses when Marines unaware of the plan kill the Japanese messenger carrying it.

Notes

With much of the force trapped by the surf, Carlson sent a note offering surrender to the Japanese commander. Other Marines, unaware of the plan, killed the messenger carrying it. The offer failed before the Japanese commander could respond. The incident is the clearest example of Carlson's decisions failing to reach the whole raiding force.
