When honor gives way to crew survival

An outmatched cruiser prompts a discussion of when a captain should fire for honor, strike the colors, and preserve the crew.

Notes

A campaign encounter places a lone cruiser in front of two far stronger pursuing ships. The captain could fire enough to demonstrate resistance, then strike the colors once continued action cannot change the outcome. Preserving the crew has to be weighed against the institutional demand for honor. Contemporary naval culture could punish an officer for surrendering too readily, which made that judgment personally dangerous as well as tactically difficult.
