The surface fleet and force redistribution

The episode questions the belief that destroying German surface ships would automatically bind British forces in European waters.

Notes

Dönitz pressed Hitler to destroy the German surface fleet on the assumption that its continued existence tied down British naval and air power. That idea is challenged because cruisers and capital ships were not the principal convoy-hunting tools. A counterfactual instead sends British battleships, carriers, cruisers, and many destroyers toward the Pacific as early as 1943. Some destroyers would still be needed for European operations, but a larger British Pacific presence could change Allied choices and increase pressure on Japan. The example shows how the disappearance of one fleet can redistribute forces across several theatres rather than simply remove targets from a single campaign.
