Sultana exposed the risks of overloaded early steamships

A chronically overloaded troop transport and a failed handmade boiler turned Sultana's homeward voyage into a catastrophic steamship disaster.

Notes

Sultana carried returning personnel after the Civil War while loaded far beyond her intended capacity. Her boiler failure produced the catastrophe that the ship's condition made possible, even though several theories circulated afterward. To contemporaries, the risk may not have appeared as exceptional as it does in hindsight. One-off boilers were handmade, imperfectly understood machines, so dangerous improvisation existed within the normal engineering culture of early steam navigation.
