How Czechoslovak arms complicated the crisis

The Czechoslovak arms connection gave Egypt access to Soviet-bloc matériel without a conspicuous direct Soviet arms transaction.

Notes

Western arms sellers imposed restrictions, partly from concern that Egypt might use the weapons against Israel. Buying through Czechoslovakia offered a politically useful alternative. Soviet-aligned weapons and shipping could reach Egypt without the conspicuous appearance of a direct Soviet arms deal. Procurement and diplomatic signalling were therefore tightly connected, and Egypt could escape Western end-use conditions without requiring Moscow to advertise an overt transfer.
