Why Stargate spacecraft need submariners

Stargate's spacecraft resemble submarines closely enough that naval specialists would offer more relevant experience than an exclusively Air Force organization.

Question

Why does Stargate use Air Force officers to run spacecraft that function like submarines?

Short answer

Submariners and other naval specialists already have experience of sensor-based operations, confined living, nuclear engineering, and shipboard logistics, making them a more natural source of crews.

Notes

Deep-space ships share a submarine's dependence on sensors, three-dimensional navigation, confined living, nuclear engineering, and self-contained logistics. Submariners already work for long periods in a closed environment where most of the outside world is known through instruments. Naval nuclear specialists, cooks, engineers, and other shipboard ratings bring skills that an Air Force organization would otherwise have to recreate. The Department of the Navy already has a role through Stargate teams composed of Marines, so recruiting naval personnel would not introduce an entirely uninvolved service. Using existing naval specialists would also make a secret programme less conspicuous than training large numbers of Air Force personnel for unfamiliar shipboard duties.
