Submarine size follows oceanic and shallow-water commitments

Britain's intermediate submarine type and America's long-range emphasis show how operating waters shape the fleet.

Notes

Most navies are expected to divide their submarines between coastal and long-range boats. Britain provides a possible three-tier alternative, adding an intermediate boat between the coastal and large types. The United States could concentrate entirely on long-range submarines because its main requirements lie in the Pacific and Atlantic. Unlike Britain, it does not need to provide the same Mediterranean and shallow-water force. The resulting fleet mix follows geography and commitments.
