What could a modern submarine 'milk cow' look like?
Short answerIt could use an internal hangar for uncrewed systems and supplies, extending an idea already seen in special-forces fittings.
NotesExisting external shelters for special forces and their equipment provide a starting point for a submarine hangar. Future uncrewed underwater vehicles will need to be deployed, recovered, repaired, and reconfigured while the submarine remains on patrol. An internal hangar could also carry supplies when the uncrewed systems were absent. Building the space into the hull would reduce the hydrodynamic noise and compromise of an external fitting. An intermediate Astute development could mature the reactor and missile systems before the next class adopts this more ambitious mission bay.
