Strategic command versus fleet command in the Far East

Reinforcing the Far East raised the question of who commanded the arriving battle fleet and who retained theater-wide authority.

Notes

Sources remain ambiguous about whether a Mediterranean commander bringing the battle fleet east would supersede the China Station commander. The Royal Navy already distinguished tactical fleet command from theater-wide strategic command. One plausible compromise would leave the locally experienced China commander in supreme regional authority while the arriving admiral handled the battle fleet. This arrangement is an interpretation rather than a documented certainty. Reinforcement added a command problem alongside the extra combat power.
