Steam and sail overlapped for reliability

A steam-propulsion question explains why hybrid sail-and-steam warships lasted until engines and fuel supply became dependable enough.

Question

When did navies move from sail with auxiliary steam to steam with auxiliary sail?

Short answer

The crossover lasted a long time because sails remained valuable until engines and fuel supplies were reliable enough to trust at sea.

Notes

HMS Warrior is the central example of a ship with powerful steam machinery that still retained sail. The transition lasted because early engines and their fuel supplies were not yet dependable enough to displace sails completely. As machinery became more reliable, designers could reduce the sailing rig. Propulsion changed with the operating system around the engine, including the ability to obtain fuel wherever the ship served.
