Chapter · 37:16-42:00

Stayner strikes the Cadiz convoy

Speaker, Bridgewater, Plymouth, and Tredagh capture or destroy much of the convoy while the Spanish commander escapes.

Notes

From Speaker, Stayner attacked Jesús María y José and captured a cargo that included forty-five tons of silver, indigo, and sugar. Bridgewater, Plymouth, and Tredagh engaged other galleons and armed merchants, sinking some and taking another prize intact. One Spanish vessel carried sixty thousand minted coins to the bottom, while the flagship San Francisco de San Diego escaped with two smaller ships. Despite uncertain gun counts and ship classifications, a small English force inflicted severe losses while only part of the convoy escaped.
