Chapter · 43:26-45:28

From Cadiz to Santa Cruz

Cadiz earns Stayner a knighthood and a place beside Blake in the next assault on Spain's treasure system.

Notes

The victory did not end the war, but it established Stayner as a proven commander and earned him a knighthood. In 1657 he accompanied Blake to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where the English attacked through the harbor forts and destroyed the Spanish ships without losing a ship of their own. The treasure had already been landed, so the operation could not seize the bullion itself. Delaying its onward movement still damaged Spain's ability to meet financial obligations.
