Why smaller warships and expendable drones matter

A Star Trek discussion argues that fleet design needs numerous smaller combatants and expendable sensors, not only large cruisers.

Notes

Smaller vessels form the practical core of day-to-day presence and wartime numbers, with Starfleet light cruisers compared to historical cruisers and destroyers. Large capital ships cannot be numerous enough to cover every routine mission or absorb wartime losses. The Defiant is read as a specialized destroyer whose heavy weapons and limited comfort distinguish it from a long-range cruiser. Expendable uncrewed craft could widen sensor coverage, help detect cloaked opponents, and reduce personnel risk without requiring the parent ship to recover every vehicle before departing. A fleet worried about losses against the Dominion or Borg has a strong reason to use automated auxiliaries to increase numbers without exposing another crew.
