The fictional NX refit inserts a secondary hull to accommodate allied technology, a new warp core, sensors, and revised shuttle arrangements. Expanded accommodation also reflects the diplomatic work expected after the alliances formed around the Romulan War. Adding volume lets the design absorb new capabilities while establishing the familiar Federation starship profile. Admiral Archer's proposed Columbia-class name commemorates the lost NX-02, the Enterprise's sister ship. Real warships have far less freedom because finite volume normally forces designers to remove equipment, accept compromises, or build a new ship.

The Star Trek Columbia refit as a modernization thought experiment
The fictional NX refit demonstrates what designers could do if they could add hull volume instead of trading away existing systems during modernization.
