Standoff weapons and the Prowler extend the bomb truck's reach

Heavy standoff weapons let the Intruder attack from outside the immediate threat, while the EA-6B Prowler reduced air-defence risk before the bomber closed in.

Notes

The A-6 never received a direct successor, but its subsonic stability and strong weapons stations gave the airframe room to evolve. The aircraft did not need to supply every measure of survivability if its weapons could reach the target from farther away. An EA-6B Prowler could then suppress hostile air defences before the Intruder approached to deliver heavier ordnance. This division of labour combined range, electronic warfare, and payload across two specialized aircraft. Together those capabilities made the Intruder family one of the Navy's most versatile assets.
